We arrived in Bucharest this morning after about 16 hours of traveling and nine time zone changes. Romania is one of the poorest countries in Eastern Europe and it really shows. While on the bus from the airport to our hotel, I felt, at times, that I was in Mexico. The hotel, by contrast, is a new modern five star Radisson in the middle of downtown. It is fantastic, throughly modern and very european. Uncle Guy and I went out this afternoon to see the sites and after 10 blocks and about 1 hour we were done. There wasn't much to see. Apparently after bombing damage from World War II and 45 years of communism the country is really beleaguered. Most of the beautiful stuff has been destroyed. There are a lot of drap grey concrete communist period housing projects around. We did walk around Revolution Square which was the center of the overthrow of the dictator Ceausescu in 1989. That was the year we moved to Sacramento. Tomorrow we are going to Bran Castle....home of Vlad Dracula and his son Vlad the impaler. That should be interesting.
