While we slept Sunday night (except for Tim and Guy, they got up at 3:30) we passed through the two locks of Djerdap, which raised us up almost 90 feet in about 90 minutes. These locks and the adjacent damn were built in the 1960s and 1970s as a joint Romanian-Serbian project to harness the hydropower of the Iron Gate Gorge. The Danube breaks dramatically through the Carpathian Mountains, forming a 100-mile long sequence of gorges named the Cataracts. The gorge of the Iron Gates, which acts as a natural border between Serbia and Romania, is stunning and one of the most dramatic natural displays of beauty in all of Europe.
As we cruised through the Iron Gates we saw Roman ruins, including an ancient fortress and Severin Castle. One of the most spectacular fortresses along this stretch is Golubac Castle, built in the 14th century.
On Monday morning, we arrived at the Serbian city of Donji Milanovac where we stopped for a couple of hours to pass through customs. We then continued our cruise to the city of Kostolac. After we docked, we were entertained on the ship by the Belgrade Old Town Music.
