We are on day 8 of our multi-week trip. Over the last few days, Internet access has been intermittent and I have been tired, making blog entries difficult. The cabin bed on our riverboat has been comfortable, but I have not been sleeping well. Last night (Sunday, August 9th), I went to bed after dinner around 8 pm and slept until 3:30 am when we arrived at the Djerdap locks at the mouth of the Iron Gates. I will come back to this later.... first lets catch up.
After leaving Bucharest, Romania on Day 3, we went south to the city of Giurgiu. There we boarded our cruise ship, the River Princess. It is part of the Uniglobe fleet, which I believe, is a Los Angeles-based company. I say ship...but I really mean boat. It is approximately 375 in length and 3 levels in height. On top is an outdoor deck with chairs and lounge chairs. The interior of the boat is well equipped and luxurious. There are 114 passengers with a capacity of around 130 and a crew of 30. Common areas include a lounge, lobby, library, store, meeting area, laundry room and dining room. Having booked over 1 year ago, we were able to get the least expensive rooms on the lower level. Our rooms are 15 feet by 12 feet, have a television, nightstand, closets, dresser drawers, bathroom and shower. Teresa is very happy with the accommodations. The food is “top drawer” and delicious.
We spent the night on the boat. In the morning before breakfast, it set sail and went across to the other side of the river to Rousse, Bulgaria where we stayed for 2 days.
On our first day in Bulgaria we loaded into buses and drove 2-1/2 hours to the town of Varna on the Black Sea. Varna was a delightful and progressive resort town.
