Wednesday morning we took a bus tour of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia and former capital of Yugoslavia. Belgrade’s often catastrophic history is truly bewildering in its complexity. Since the Greek historian Herodotus first mentioned it 25 centuries ago, the city has been completely destroyed 44 times, witnessed 115 major battles, had 40 different names and served as a capital of five different states. It was extensively bombed during both World Wars and was bombed about 10 years ago by NATO.
We visited Tito’s Memorial, located at the site of his former residence in Belgrade’s affluent neighborhood of Dedinje. The museum offers a glimpse of the life of Josip Broz Tito, who both united and divided the citizens of Yugoslavia. It contains presents from around the world that were given to Tito. The grounds also contain the House of Flowers, known at Tito’s mausoleum, that contains dozens of batons and torches that were created and given to Tito.
We also visited the Kalemeggdan Fortress, which gave us a look at the region’s Roman and medieval past. We had the afternoon to shop and found a few good buys. Tim and Craig both became multibillionaires when they purchased bills in the local currency worth 500,000,000,000 Dinar.
